The Impact of Data Centers on the Environment

Computing isn’t as clean and green as some might think it is. There is a growing awareness of the environmental impact of computers and end-user power consumption, but with the trend toward cloud computing and the ever-expanding world of online content, it is important to remember the impact of data centers on the environment. Data centers consume huge amounts of electricity, all with a formidable carbon footprint. According to some estimates, by 2020 web hosting will be responsible for more carbon emissions than the airline industry. This infographic shows the environmental impact of data centers and comes to us courtesy of BrainHost.com, a web hosting company that has recently committed itself to green web hosting.

  1. I am not sure whether the “green hosting” providers are the best hosting providers. But I think that there is a global social responsibility to choose green web hosting providers.

  2. Wow, I’m glad that I found this because Brainhost is my hosting provider:) Such a descriptive picture. Also I’m supporter of every Go Green initiative. Well done Tom 😉

  3. I like the idea of using a “green” hosting service.

The problem that faced me was that I could not locate a hosting service that would accept my payments Month To Month.

That was my main concern because of my budget.

With my current service, I get great uptime, bandwidth, domains and space.

Hopefully in the future I will be able to find a “green” one that will meet my needs.

  4. Very informative I will definitely have to think about going this route. I’ve been switching to as many green options as possible but hadn’t thought about this.
