Ethical Host

ethicalhost

In their words:

EthicalHost is dedicated to providing professional, low cost, green &
ethical web hosting services that make a difference in the environment and
in people’s lives and communities. Based in Toronto, Canada, we donate 10%
of our pre-tax profits to social and environmental organizations. In order
to reduce our businesses impact on the environment, we have partnered with
Bullfrog power to supply green electricity directly to our office. To offset
our servers (and supporting equipment) carbon footprint, we have purchased
offsets from Planetair which supports only gold certified renewable energy
projects. We also reduce in other ways such as telecommuting, using energy
star rated equipment, re-using paper and using only post consumer recycled
paper wherever possible.

Sustainable Websites

sustainablewebsites

In their words:

“SustainableWebsites.com is a project of SustainableMarketing.com – a community of green businesses using the power of network effects to promote their businesses. The more green businesses that host with us, the better the network becomes, and the more opportunities grow for all of us!”

SustainableWebsites offsets their energy use with wind power. They also have a strong back end of sustainability through their other work as a collaborative of green businesses. They offer WordPress, Drupal and Joomla hosting which is always a nice bonus. Plus you know their background in e-marketing will be helpful.

A small company is the best kind to work with as a customer so I would not hesitate to recommend checking them out.

HostPapa

hostpapa

In their words:

HostPapa has taken the initiative of going green by purchasing 100% green renewable energy to power our data center, web servers, office computers, laptops and office space. These energy sources supply HostPapa’s entire equivalent energy consumption into the power-grid with certified 100% renewable green energy sources, such as wind and solar-powered energy.

HostPapa was an early riser in the green hosting industry. Though it wasn’t that long ago – 2006 found green web hosting in its infancy. Hostpapa was there – offsetting their energy use by purchasing the equivalent of 100% green energy. The price is right for several unlimited features – we hope to see HostPapa rise in the ranks of green web hosts in the near future. Check them out here.

AISO.net

aiso

In their words:

“AISO.Net is a reliable and responsible green web hosting company. We have made a strong commitment to help fight pollution and preserving our natural resources. Solar panels run our green data center and office, not energy credits.

Solar tubes bring in natural light from the outside providing light during the day. AMD Opteron powered IBM servers use sixty percent less energy; generate fifty percent less heat.

These are just some of the ways AISO.Net is becoming the world’s most responsible green web hosting company.”

AISO.net is by far the most environmentally friendly web host we’ve found. This is because their servers are directly powered by renewable energy. You won’t find renewable energy credits here. Check them out here.

HostGator

hostgator

In their words:

“HostGator hosts over 1,300,000 websites on its shared and reseller servers. That means a lot of servers, and a lot of carbon emissions. So we asked ourselves, What can we do to be part of the climate change solution? We took steps to minimize our environmental impact at the office, but still we weren’t satisfied. We then switched to 36% more efficient servers, but still we weren’t satisfied!”

DreamHost

dreamhost

Coupon Code: Free domain: ECOHOSTDISCOUNT

In their words:

“We’ve calculated the impact of everything that DreamHost uses and leaves behind in the course of our daily work. All of the resources that we use – paper in the office, electricity for our servers, even the gas in our cars that bring us to the office – leaves behind some kind of soul-sucking residue in the world.

When we learned that running DreamHost generated as much carbon dioxide as 545 average-size homes we realized we had to do something to neutralize our emissions.

With a bit of research we found the most effective approach begins with resource conservation: turning off the lights, reducing travel, printing on both sides of the page. Efforts are being ramped up here daily to do what we do with less. The next step is to use clean, renewable energy. Without the option to put up solar panels or connect with a green power utility for us this means purchasing Renewable Energy Credits. Finally, to neutralize those unavoidable emissions we’ve invested in Emission Reduction Credits (a.k.a. “offsets”) which guarantee our remaining impact is effectively erased.”

Dreamhost makes the point that “green hosting” is not just purchasing carbon offsets. Although that is their chosen method of greening their energy use, they also believe in environmentalism’s place in the office, and in their community. From using coffee cups made from renewable sources (ceramic mugs would be even better), to upgrading server quality to save primary energy usage – Dreamhost is making real efforts to clean up web hosting.
